Each year our students write about on a given prompt.  This year's prompt is; Faces of Literacy.

Information for current tutors

We would like to have as many students as possible participate.  Here is some information to get started.

Celebrate Writing 2012 – “Faces of Literacy”

Each year students are given the opportunity to be published in a book of student writings. You and your student(s) will each receive a copy at Celebration of the Stars, held June 21, 2012.

“Faces of Literacy” is the theme for this year’s book. It will be formatted like an interview page, often seen in magazines. You can see a sample of one on the back of this page. We are very excited to share this theme and will be using it on our website and other promotional materials throughout the year. For the first time, we will be including photos with the writings. Please encourage your student to participate!

Every student will have their own page, which will start with their picture and name. Next, work with your student on answering each of the following prompts with one or two sentences. Each one of these could become a lesson in itself. We have a few ideas to get you started, but also have many additional materials, especially on multiple intelligences. Contact your staff support person to get more resources.

The three words that best describe me are…
(Lesson ideas: adjectives, similar/different, synonyms/antonyms)
The one thing about me that you would be surprised to know is…
(Lesson ideas: self-awareness, perceptions of others, hidden talents)
I can’t wait until I can…
(Lesson ideas: interests, passions, drive, goal setting)
Learning is…
(Lesson ideas: expectations, personal feelings)
I learn best… (Describe their multiple intelligence strengths.)
(Lesson ideas: The first step is to work with your student in assessing their multiple intelligences. We have several versions of an assessment that can be used.)
One of my main goals for this year is…
(Lesson ideas: goal setting, short term/long term, sequence or order of tasks)
When I reach this goal I will be better able to…
(Lesson ideas: goal setting, motivation)

Lastly, you can have your student prepare a longer written response (one to three paragraphs) from one of the following prompts:
A funny or interesting story about me is when…
In five years, I see myself…
A favorite memory of mine is when…
