Chippewa County offers 3 programs for adults and their families:
  • One-to-One Tutoring
  • Corrections Education in the Chippewa County Jail
  • Family Literacy in Holcombe

One To One Tutoring

Volunteers participate in a 16 hour training that prepares them to be matched with an adult student. Pairs meet at least once per week for at least an hour in a public location such as the  Public Library, CVTC, a school or church. The volunteer tutor and adult student work on goals identified by the student such as improving their reading ability, English speaking, citizenship, reading to their children, learning to use the computer, improving their employment or perhaps getting a driver's license.

Corrections Education

GED and HSED instruction are conducted in the Chippewa County Jail. Instructors work with the assistance of trained volunteer tutors on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30 until 3:30. Tutors also work in the evenings or weekends with inmates requiring additional help. Two additional programs are conducted within the jail. A book club meets monthly with a volunteer tutor facilitating discussion about an assigned book. Prior to Christmas and Easter, volunteer tutors, board members, and staff assist inmates record reading a book to their children on tape. The books and tapes are wrapped and sent to the children of the inmates.

Family Literacy

Family literacy is available through a partnership with the Northern Region Family Literacy Program located in Holcombe. Tutors work with parents on their individual literacy goals. Family literacy includes four components: adult education, early childhood education, interactive literacy activities and parenting. The program is located at the Lake Holcombe Schools and is offered on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 8:30 until 11:30. Anyone who has ever been in a family and has a literacy need is welcome to attend. To enroll or get more information call Kathy Walthers at 715-595-4241 ex 261.

For more information about either tutoring or becoming a learner in any of the programs available in Chippewa County, contact Margarete Cook at 715-738-3857 or e-mail Margarete.
