Eau Claire County offers 4 Programs for adults and their families:
  • One-to-One Tutoring
  • Family Literacy
  • Workplace Literacy

    One-to-One Tutoring

Volunteers participate in a 16 hour training that prepares them to be matched with adult students. Pairs meet once or twice per week for at least an hour in a public location such as the  Literacy Volunteers main office, L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library, Chippewa Valley Technical College or a school. The volunteer tutors and adult students work on goals identified by the students such as improving their reading ability, speaking English, obtaining U.S. citizenship, reading to their children, learning to use the computer, improving their employment or perhaps getting a driver's license.

For more information about becoming either a tutor or a learner in the one-to-one program in Eau Claire County, contact Pat Burnam at 715-834-2451 or e-mail Pat.

    Family Literacy

Family Literacy provides opportunities for families to learn together and build positive attitudes toward education. Parents have the opportunity to improve their basic skills and/or English competencies. While they are pursuing their personal and educational goals, their young children participate in their own educational programs. Parents must agree to participate in parenting classes and parent-child activities. The four components of family literacy services are: (1) Adult Education (including computer and employability classes) that leads to economic self-sufficiency; (2) Early Childhood Education; (3) Interactive Literacy Activities between parents and their children; and (4) Parent Education that focuses on teaching parents to become their child's first and foremost teacher and full partners in the education of their children. Literacy Volunteers typically collaborates with other agencies and organizations to provide comprehensive Family Literacy programs.

Family Literacy classes are offered Monday through Thursday from 9:00 to 12:30 and on Monday and Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:30 at the Mason Building on Graham Ave. in Eau Claire

For more information about becoming either a tutor or a learner in the Eau Claire Family Literacy Program, contact Barb Nelson at 715-833-5316 or e-mail Barb.

    Workplace Literacy

Workplace literacy programs support employees—in their workplace—who need assistance with basic skills and English competencies. When employment makes it difficult for employees to get literacy help on their own, volunteer tutors under the guidance of a Literacy Volunteers instructor may bring literacy services to the workplace with the support of the employer. Services may include group or one-to-one work. At this time, programs are offered at the Career Development Center (CDC), Minnesota Wire and Cable and Nortech Systems.

For more information about becoming either a tutor or a learner in the workplace literacy program in Eau Claire, contact Pat Burnam at 715-834-2451 or e-mail Pat.
