Volunteers
works within local county jails on two levels:
1. GED and HSED classes as well as one-to-one tutoring are available in Chippewa County and Dunn County through a partnership between Literacy Volunteers and the two county jails. Educationally sound programs designed to meet the needs of the individual are provided for incarcerated individuals who make a formal commitment to the program. 2. The Parents Sharing Books Program (with original funding from Marian Ackley) is available in two counties (Dunn and Chippewa). At designated times, tutors go into the jails and help inmates record books onto tape. The books and tapes are then wrapped as gifts and sent to the inmates’ children.Workplace LiteracyWorkplace literacy programs support employees—in their workplace—who need assistance with basic skills and English competencies. When employment makes it difficult for employees to get literacy help on their own, volunteer tutors under the guidance of a Literacy Volunteers instructor may bring literacy services to the workplace with the support of the employer. Services may include group or one-to-one work. At this time, programs are offered at the Career Development Center (CDC), Minnesota Wire and Cable and Nortech Systems. Citizenship
Students
receive assistance from an instructor and trained tutors in preparation for the citizenship application process. Trained tutors
assist students in completing application materials and preparing for the written exam and oral interview at the Bureau of
Citizenship and Immigration Services. This program is offered in Chippewa, Dunn and
