One-to-One Tutoring

Adult students are matched with individuals who have completed tutor training. Literacy Volunteers employs a 50/50 system of volunteer management that places equal emphasis (and resources) on intake and support of both learners and tutors. Potential learners are recruited, oriented, assessed and matched with tutors. Potential tutors are recruited, oriented, trained, assessed and matched with a student. The tutor and student pairs meet at least once a week for one or more hours. The pair sets individual goals and then works on skills necessary for attaining those goals. The support focus involves tutor/student follow-up, in-service training of tutors, recognition of tutors and students, newsletters, resource materials, student portfolios, lesson plan development, ongoing learner assessment and re-matching (when necessary). One-to-one tutoring is available in Chippewa County, Dunn County and Eau Claire County.

Family Literacy

Family Literacy provides opportunities for families to learn together and build positive attitudes toward education. Parents have the opportunity to improve their basic skills and/or English competencies. While they are pursuing their personal and educational goals, their young children participate in their own educational programs. Parents must agree to participate in parenting classes and parent-child activities. The four components of family literacy services are: (1) Adult Education (including computer and employability classes) that leads to economic self-sufficiency; (2) Early Childhood Education; (3) Interactive Literacy Activities between parents and their children; and (4) Parent Education that focuses on teaching parents to become their child's first and foremost teacher and full partners in the education of their children. Literacy Volunteers typically collaborates with other agencies and organizations to provide comprehensive Family Literacy programs. Family Literacy is offered in Eau Claire and through a partnership with the Northern Region Family Literacy Program in Holcombe.

Corrections Education

Literacy Volunteers works within local county jails on two levels:

1. GED and HSED classes as well as one-to-one tutoring are available in Chippewa County and Dunn County through a partnership between Literacy Volunteers and the two county jails. Educationally sound programs designed to meet the needs of the individual are provided for incarcerated individuals who make a formal commitment to the program.

2. The Parents Sharing Books Program (with original funding from Marian Ackley) is available in two counties (Dunn and Chippewa). At designated times, tutors go into the jails and help inmates record books onto tape. The books and tapes are then wrapped as gifts and sent to the inmates’ children.

Workplace Literacy

Workplace literacy programs support employees—in their workplace—who need assistance with basic skills and English competencies. When employment makes it difficult for employees to get literacy help on their own, volunteer tutors under the guidance of a Literacy Volunteers instructor may bring literacy services to the workplace with the support of the employer. Services may include group or one-to-one work. At this time, programs are offered at the Career Development Center (CDC), Minnesota Wire and Cable and Nortech Systems.

Citizenship

Students receive assistance from an instructor and trained tutors in preparation for the citizenship application process. Trained tutors assist students in completing application materials and preparing for the written exam and oral interview at the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. This program is offered in Chippewa, Dunn and Eau Claire Counties on a one-to-one basis.
